Caudon® Pitfall Trap 5.6L Circular (Recycled)

A smaller 5.6L pitfall trap, also known as a newt trap or bucket trap. This size of pitfall trap has become popular due to lower cost and ease of installation and are ideal for the trapping and translocation of great crested newts. Comes with plastic handle and resealable lid with easy-open catch. 

These are now supplied made from 70% post consumer recycled plastic (PCR) for improved sustainability.

Pitfall traps are installed such that they are in contact with a newt fence along its length at regular intervals. Mobile great crested newts will, at some point, make contact with the fence, follow the fence boundary and then drop into a pitfall trap, to then be collected by the overseeing ecologist on the project.

Should be fitted with a Mammal Ladder, float and clump of (preferably damp) vegetation or a moss packet to provide shelter for great crested newts. The mammal ladder provides a means of escape for any small mammals such as shrews that should fall into a pitfall trap and the float provides a refuge for amphibians should the pitfall trap become flooded with water.
